The Absolute Monarch
After the assassination of his father, Alexander III became Czar of Russia in 1881. Fearing the possibility of another assassination, Alexander III cracked down on anyone who questioned or threatened his power. Anyone who dared to question his authority was often arrested and killed. Any non-Russian who lived in the country was quickly exiled, in order to create a "Russia-only" culture. This treatment of arresting, killing, and exiling Russian people especially included the Jews. Alexander III blamed, and killed, Jewish people for all of Russia's problems. (Foreshadowing- Adolf Hitler will do the same thing during the Great Depression.)
The Terrible Dictator
Alexander III enjoyed the fact that people feared and respected him more than they respected his father, and in 1883, he declared himself the Absolute Czar of all of Russia, destroying any hope the people had of getting rights or a Constitution.
In the end, Alexander III is remembered for being a horrible, cruel dictator who killed anyone who questioned his power. The little freedoms that his father, Alexander II, had given the Russian people were quickly undone during Alexander III's reign. In 1888, an assassin threw a bomb under Alexander III's train, but the Czar was not seriously injured. In 1894 through, the Absolute King finally died from liver problems. His dictatorship was finally over.
